Tamoxifen & uterine cancer

Understanding womb health during tamoxifen treatment.

Tamoxifen is used in breast cancer care. It can also affect the womb lining and is associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Individual risks and benefits should be discussed with your treating team.

Symptoms to report

Report unexpected vaginal bleeding, spotting or unusual discharge, particularly after menopause. These symptoms have several possible causes and should be assessed rather than assumed to be a medication effect.

Assessment of the womb lining

Your symptoms and history guide investigations. Ultrasound, hysteroscopy or a sample of the womb lining may be appropriate. Routine ultrasound screening is not automatically needed for everyone taking tamoxifen without symptoms.

If cancer is suspected or diagnosed

Further investigation and referral to a gynaecological oncology team may be needed. Cancer care is planned according to the diagnosis and stage. Do not stop tamoxifen without discussing it with the clinician managing your breast cancer treatment.
