Assessment before treatment
Your symptoms, ultrasound appearance, cyst size, age and menopausal status guide the assessment. Blood tests or additional investigations may be recommended.
When surgery may be considered
Persistent, large or symptomatic cysts, or concerning scan findings, may lead to a discussion about surgery. Suspected cancer needs an appropriate specialist pathway.
Laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal
A laparoscopic cystectomy removes a cyst through small incisions. Preserving ovarian tissue is considered where appropriate, but removal of an ovary may sometimes be necessary. Fertility priorities should be discussed before surgery.
When an open approach is appropriate
A larger incision may be needed because of cyst size, concerning features or surgical complexity. Risks include bleeding, infection, injury to surrounding organs, effects on ovarian function and conversion to open surgery. Recovery is individual.
