Understanding the pattern
Keep a record of bleeding days, flow, clots and associated pain. Tell your doctor about bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause.
Finding the cause
Assessment may include a pregnancy test where relevant, blood tests for anaemia and ultrasound. Fibroids, polyps, hormonal changes and other conditions may contribute. Further tests depend on age, history and findings.
Treatment choices
Options may include medication, hormonal treatment or treatment of an underlying condition. Surgery is considered where appropriate, with fertility plans and personal preferences included in the discussion.
