Gynaecology / PMOS (formerly PCOS)

PMOS (formerly PCOS)

Care for hormonal, menstrual and metabolic health.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can affect periods, ovulation, skin and metabolic health.

Symptoms and assessment

Irregular or infrequent periods, acne, excess hair growth and difficulty conceiving may occur. Assessment considers your symptoms, hormone tests and, when appropriate, ultrasound, while excluding other causes.

More than an ovarian scan finding

The condition involves hormonal and metabolic health. Blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol assessment may be relevant. A scan alone does not establish the diagnosis.

A plan shaped around your goals

Care may include lifestyle support and medication for menstrual or metabolic concerns. Treatment differs when trying to conceive. Discuss infrequent periods so that protection of the womb lining can be considered.
