Symptoms and investigations
Heavy or painful periods, pelvic discomfort and pain during sex may occur. Ultrasound, and sometimes MRI, can help assess suspected adenomyosis and other causes.
Treatment without surgery
Treatment is tailored to symptoms and pregnancy plans. Options may include medicines to reduce bleeding or pain, and hormonal treatments such as a hormonal intrauterine system when suitable.
When surgery is discussed
If symptoms persist despite treatment, surgery may be considered. Hysterectomy removes the womb and ends the possibility of carrying a pregnancy. The benefits, risks and alternatives need an individual discussion.
