ASCUS & HPV

Making sense of cervical screening results.

An ASCUS (ASC-US) result or a positive HPV test can feel worrying. These findings do not by themselves mean cervical cancer.

What does ASCUS mean?

ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Some cervical cells look different from normal, but the cause is unclear. HPV testing and your previous results help guide the next step.

Understanding HPV

Human papillomavirus is a common virus. Persistent infection with certain high-risk types can lead to cervical cell changes. A positive test is a reason for appropriate follow-up, rather than a cancer diagnosis.

Follow-up and colposcopy

Depending on your age, HPV type, screening result and history, follow-up may involve repeat testing or colposcopy. Bring the full report and records of any previous cervical treatment. Treatment decisions depend on the assessment and any biopsy results.
